April School Holiday Fun!

School Holiday Fun!

At From The Woods With Love we are at the start of our first official school holiday break!

With our oldest bambino completing his first term of Reception – it has been a huge adjustment for all of us. And not to mention we have missed him like crazy. Now the big question – how to fill these glorious 2 weeks with Mr 5 back by our side! Yes he needs some rest as he has finished the term exhausted….. but we also need some fun!

So here is our SA relevant list…..

Morialta Nature Playground, Stradbroke Road, Woodforde

Belair Adventure Playground, Belair National Park, Belair

The Tree Climb, Children’s Adventure Course, Greenhill Road, Adelaide (Children must be over 100cm in height)

Beach time, we love it regardless of the weather!

Baking Anzac cookies (And most probably pancakes too!)

Easter craft

If we tick the rest off….. tidy up the paddock, collect sticks and make a nature teepee!

How will you be filling your school holidays?

Memory Card Game - Animal - mum life

I love being a mum! I am a mumma to two of the most amazing little humans. They are crazy, funny, adventurous, creative, affectionate and loud!! Mum life is heaven and I wouldn’t change a thing….. except all the plastic toys in our home.

When I was a child we played with beautiful, hand made toys. We didn’t have a playroom filled with them, but the toys we had were great quality. I am passionate about surrounding my children with toys that will aid their development, beautifully made, safe for our health and the health of our planet, long lasting (and I mean really tough!!) and aesthetically gorgeous.

I want my children to have toys that last so well they can proudly give to their own children.

This hunt has led me to WOOD! Wooden toys encourage creativity and imagination. They have less chemicals than plastic and are recyclable! A quality wooden toy has longevity, can outlast a generation of tiny fingers and become a family heirloom.

I adore gift giving. Many people will groan at the thought. I love to select gifts that are beautiful, hand made, timeless and high quality. There is joy in selecting a gift that a child and mother will both love, and that will be different from all their other gifts. Pre Christmas and birthdays are my most favourite months of mum life, when I am busy selecting the gifts for my family and friends! THE BEST!!

This passion has led me to create From The Woods With Love. A carefully selected collection of beautiful and timeless wooden toys, and homewares for children.

I invite your to join me on this journey to provide the best play and learning environment for our little ones.

Winter School Holiday fun….

Winter School Holiday activity ideas!

Daunted by the idea of the approaching winter School Holidays? Are you predicting it is going to be a wet two weeks in your town or city? I was just slightly terrified prior to researching this post! Read on for a couple of new ideas to make the most of quality time with your little people during the July School Holidays.

Sweet Tooth?

In SA we are blessed with chocolate factories that offer tours and tastings! Think Haighs and Melba’s! Phone ahead to check on availability in case you need to book.

Like a Roaring good time?

The Zoo is a great place to visit during winter! You will find a lot less visitors in the cooler months and might even have the place to yourselves! Sure, some of the residents might be in hiding… but those crazy penguins and amusing meerkats are amongst the many animals that will be looking forward to seeing you and your little people, regardless of the temperature!

Peppa Pig fan?

This a no-brainer… put on the gum boots and go adventuring! You will all be creating forever memories while jumping in puddles…. particularly if you all get caught in the rain!

Have a Bake Off!

Messy but oh so fun!

Do you remember those strange places called libraries?

They actually still exist! A lovely place to spend a few hours, reading and playing! Visit the website of your local to check on school holiday activities relevant to the ages of your children.

Any friends with a farm?

The best time of year to toast marshmallows on a bonfire and meet the farm animals! Rug up and enjoy the outdoors.

Still stuck…. you can always go to the movies…. host a movie night….or have a pyjama party!

Marching Bambino…. beating the drum for children’s eco friendly musical instruments

Marching Bambino are passionate creators of environmentally friendly wooden instruments.

Based in Brisbane, founder Alice is a strong believer in the power of music for children’s development, hence Marching Bambino was born.

Music is an important part of our family time in our home. Our children love to dance, make noise, play with instruments and sing. They have found joy in this from the time they could walk.

Music helps children refine their hand and eye coordination skills, as well as to build confidence.

Our favourites are the three piece drum kit, tambourine and maracas. The prefect size for small hands and subtly stylish with attractive timber frames.

We were blown away by their beautiful threading toys. Fine motor skills are constantly on the minds of parents, and a toy that is both visually appealing and fun while educational is a win on all fronts.

Ducks, clouds, fish, boats, nets, knots and other sea world elements are constant themes in the designs. The products are made from sanded European Beechwood.

How to make the most of Autumn!

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons. Let these guided activity ideas help your family to enjoy all that Autumn has to offer.

Collect colourful Autumn leaves to make a collage

Dig out the glue, pencils and googly eyes…. Think birds, fish or a magical garden. Let their imagination run wild. (And of coure let your little ones throw leaves and make piles to jump in while collecting!)

Make a bird feeder

I remember doing this as a child! Collect pine cones, tie a length of string for hanging. Slather in peanut butter then add seeds. Watch the birds enjoy it once hanging in your favourite tree.

Bird watching

Whether in your garden or the local park, the birds are around and active. Make the most of the mild, dry days to get outside and enjoy bird watching.

Have a picnic

In Autumn we try to be outside as much as possible in anticipation of those long wet days spent inside when winter arrives.

Gardening with bulbs ready for spring

Autumn and in particular May in Australia is the best time to plant bulbs. My children love to help in the garden. Last May we planted Tulips and Daffodils. The children loved watching them grow and flower in spring.

Paint an Autumn tree

Mix paint in the beautiful autumn colours, paint a trunk and let the children finger paint the leaves.

Leaf tracing

Collect leaves and place between two pieces of paper. When you rub with a pencil all their lovely veins and bumps will show through.

Get creative with an Autumn themed play doh session

Autumn collectables like leaves, seeds and pine cones can be a great addition to play doh play!

So get out there and get creative! Enjoy all that Autumn has to offer before that cold winter wind starts to blow our way….

How to care for and clean wooden toys

clean wooden toys

As you can tell we love wooden toys! Wooden toys are safe, natural and durable. They stimulate creativity and children’s senses. But how is the best way to clean wooden toys?

  1. Keep it natural with mild dish soap, vinegar (white vinegar or apple cider works well) or other non-toxic multipurpose cleaner, diluted with water. Wood has a natural antibacterial quality so they will not be as effected by germs as plastic toys.
  2. Never soak or immerse wooden toys in water – just spray, wipe with a cloth and warm water, then air dry. Wood is porous so a soaking might cause them to swell and change shape.
  3. Drying in the sun is great as it speeds up the drying process and the sun is a natural way to kill more germs. However strong sunlight or prolonged exposure can lead to colour fade and cracking – so monitor it. You will have those little hands back with their favourite toys in no time!

Depending on the wooden item, occasional moisturising can be beneficial. Olive oil works well or another non-toxic option is beeswax polish. (Beeswax polish smells delicious!)

When considering cleaning your wooden toys remember to refer to the manufacturers care instructions for specific information on your items.
